This is for beginners and those who would like to become active crew members rather than just passengers. By the end of the course you should be able to steer, handle sails, keep a lookout, row a dinghy and assist in all the day to day routines.

About the course

Delivered over 2 days, this taster course will teach you the basics of yachting, including steering a yacht, rope work, sail trimming and safety onboard.

You’ll develop a basic knowledge of sea terms, parts of the boat, rigging and sails, experience sailing a yacht on all points of sail, and steer a yacht under sail or power. The course also covers emergency equipment and precautions, clothing and equipment, meteorology, and how to recover someone overboard.

5 days. Often run over 3 weekends or 3 days plus a weekend. If you have done the Start Yachting course, this course can be completed in 3 or 4 days.

You do not need to bring anything other than warm clothes and suitable footwear. We will supply wet gear and safety equipment. Although the course is for adults over the age of 18 years we can accomodate a child accopanied by a parent.

This couse is taught with a ratio of (5:1) students to instructor and covers the following:

Knowledge of sea terms and parts of a boat, her rigging and sails, sail handling, ropework, fire precautions and fighting, personal safety equipment, man overboard, emergency equipment, meteorology, seasickness, helmsmanship, general duties, manners
